In this episode, Celestine Raven talks to a heroine: Conny Braam. In the 1970s, she founded the anti-apartheid movement in the Netherlands. The apartheid regime in South Africa was still firmly in power, and Nelson Mandela was in prison on Robben Island. Braam played a big role in the underground resistance during those years, at a house in the Lekstraat in Amsterdam. "Lekstraat number 4, 2nd floor," Braam recounts. "During World War II, the entire neighborhood was connected to the resistance. The history of that street motivated me to keep going." She set up a secret communication line with Nelson Mandela. All of this was not without danger. "There were countless attempts to kill me. In her new book – The History of Pelle – former mayor Ed v Braam searches for her roots and describes the life of her grandmother, Pelle. In doing so, Braam discovers Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis, one of the founders of the socialist movement in the Netherlands. "He wanted to deliberately give people insight into why they were so poor. He was also a brave fighter who led the way." Braam also hopes to be an inspiration for new generations herself.'
